The Media and Tim Tebow: A Never Ending Crush
64
I've never liked Tim Tebow. Period. Now some may continue to read after that sentence, or if you are in love with him, you will stop reading. I don't care for Tebow, not because of his good boy image, or Christian, moral values, or because he was considered a college football god, playing among boys. No, I don't like Tebow mostly, because the media has a never ending infatuation with him.
Now I will admit, that in college, he was good, two national championships and a Heisman Trophy would prove that case for him alone. But, college was where my dislike for him began. The media started this Tebow polarizing bandwagon that is still going on today, and only got bigger with the Broncos comeback win over the Dolphins, yesterday, capped by Tebow's 2 very late, fourth quarter touchdowns. I could be pretty biased from him beating Darren McFadden for the Heisman Trophy in 2007. And being a huge Razorbacks fan, I felt that DMac should have won instead. Even before that, the sports writers were always writing, and the experts were always talking about Tebow. When something is constantly shoved in your face, especially when someone like me, spend a lot of time watching ESPN, it get old and irritating to constantly hear about it (look at Favre and his retirement flip flopping, it got old).
When Tebow's college career with the Florida Gators ended, it didn't stop there. It was only shifted to the NFL Draft. And the biggest story going into the 2010 Draft, was whether Tebow would be successful as an NFL quarterback, and what team would be willing to take him early. Ever sense he entered the NFL, the media as written dozens and dozens of stories on him. Even during the 2010 offseason, there was debate on whether Tebow would be the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos. It was constant, and daily. There's 31 other quarterback positions in the NFL and the media only wants to talk about the Denver Broncos. He spent the 2010 season as a backup to Kyle Orton, who has a career year for himself. And I was glad to see Tebow not get his chance. I personally don't think he's a career NFL material quarterback.
The NFL lockout of this summer kept everything quiet, but as soon as the NFL was back on, sports writers kept going on with who would be the starting quarterback for the Broncos during training camp and who would be backup. Again, there's 31 other quarterback positions in the NFL, and while quite a few of them are locked up on who is the starter, there's a good handful of others where players were trying to become the starter. But those stories were barely picked up on, except for those teams local newspapers and websites. People barely heard about the Washington Redskins, and John Beck and Rex Grossman, or the San Francisco 49ers, and whether Alex Smith would be the starter. There's a good amount of other teams, who don't and at the time, didn't have a definitive starting quarterback, but was barely mentioned.
When Tebow was mentioned as the starter for the Dolphins game this past weekend. It was all over Yahoo! Sports, NFL.com, and ESPN. I'd get on ESPN mobile, and the first 4 stories on the NFL feed, would be about the Broncos or Tim Tebow. It's ridiculous for the media to be obsessed about one player. As much as I don't care for Tebow, I will admit, I started him on one of my five fantasy football teams Sunday. Only because of his fantasy potential to score touchdowns(it helped that I had Aaron Rodgers also started on that team, so it was worth the risk).
As a huge football fan, I spend a lot of time submersed in the NFL news and updating myself on the goings on in the sport, so I have to see stories about Tebow on a constant, daily basis. I hate that the only way this media crush will seem to end is when his career ends. Hopefully they open their eyes and see he's not that much worth talking about. That they will cause fans to become tired of him, well anyone not in the Denver or Florida area. Until another player comes along, do I hope for the end of this crush.

Being a Raider fan I dislike (would say hate but that is a strong word) anything Denver Broncos and that includes Tim Tebow. Being a football I can see what you see with the media and Tim Tebow and I do get tired of hearing about him. Thanks for the hub!

I agree with you about Tebow getting too much media attention but some people are just on a different level and I think Tebow is one of them,it does make you sick though when that is all ESPN has to say.
McFadden is a beast - and Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson is the toughest guy I have ever seen in my life, I am a huge Alabama fan and he took more hits in that game than I have ever seen in a game in my life.
